The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
Premieres 1 June, Wednesday 8pm first & exclusively on Animax (StarHub TV Channel 532)
It is mid-December and SOS Brigade chief Haruhi Suzumiya announces that they are going to hold a Christmas party in their clubroom, with Japanese hotpot for dinner. SOS Brigade members Kyon, Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina and Itsuki Koizumi start preparing everything including costumes and decorations for the party.
However, a couple of days later, Kyon arrives at school to find Haruhi missing. Not only that, Mikuru claims she has never known Kyon before, Koizumi has gone missing, and Yuki has become the sole member of the literature club. The SOS Brigade seems to have never existed, nor has Haruhi Suzumiya. No one in the school has ever heard about her… except for Kyon.
Released in theatres in Japan in 2010, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is a theatrical anime movie sequel to the The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 TV anime series.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya franchise is a light-hearted peek into the life of the eponymous high-school student, who unconsciously possesses profound powers that can change, destroy or create a new reality based on her feelings. If allowed to become bored, she is capable of destroying the universe at a whim and without even knowing it.
In the first anime series, Haruhi, who professes to have no interest in ‘ordinary human beings’, sets up her own school club, the SOS Brigade, to search for paranormal beings such as aliens, time-travellers and ‘ESPers’ (beings with extra sensory perception), and to investigate mysteries of the universe. Forced into the club is Kyon, a regular school boy and narrator of the story.
Unknown to Haruhi, the three other club members, Yuki, Mikuru and Itsuki, are an extraterrestrial, a time traveller, and an ‘ESPer’, respectively. The trio have been sent by their organizations to observe and entertain Haruhi to keep a lid on her reality-warping powers.
Given the unenviable task of engaging and keeping occupied the easily bored and unpredictable Haruhi, the four friends follow her erratic and amusing day-to-day antics in and out of school to maintain the illusion of a normal life.
In the second anime TV series, the quintet experience a whirlwind last two weeks of their summer break, which sees them going to fun-fairs, doing part-time jobs and embarking on bug hunts. There is a twist when Kyon wakes up on the day that they are supposed to return to school and has a déjà vu experience of the activities they enjoyed during the period. Haruhi had inadvertently put the activities of the last two weeks on an infinite loop and her friends had to find a way to stop the sequence of events from repeating endlessly.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is the latest instalment of the anime adaptation of ‘The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya’ light novel series. The movie took almost US$7.5 million from the Japanese box office. The franchise also includes seven video games that have been released for Sony’s PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, Nintendo’s DS and Wii, as well as on the Apple iPhone and iPad platforms.
