Another do it all person would be Makoto Shinkai(Voice of a Distance Star), before he joined up with his current studio. I really admire people like them, they are so good at what they are doing and have the patients to endure thur the whole production process…

A tribute to Satoshi Kon

Posted by tueac On August - 25 - 2010

On August 24th 2010, Director Satoshi Kon, aged 46, died suddenly due to pancreatic cancer, and the world loss a brilliant director that to me changed the anime scene.

I will not profess on how much I love him, since I hardly know him personally… But he is an important man for the way he used the anime media, giving it a boost when he directed Perfect Blue. An anime that is as good as a art film, showing that anime as a media is just as powerful as any others.

Of the movies that he have directed, I have watched all of them other then Paranoia Agent, without a doubt they are very big influence for me. From the first one shown by my polytechnic friend “Tokyo Godfather” during a camp and to the latest “Paprika”.

These films open my eyes to a world where anime is not just a medium to reach the children, they are more than it. It can be serious, and matured. Anime is not like the American’s animation, where everything is really mean to be at most a PG. It’s a serious media, where a message can be passed along for serious thoughts.

Not all Anime is childish and I only truly understand it for the first time in my life when I first watched “Tokyo Godfathers”. This line of thinking is further reinforced by Satoshi’s other titles, “The Millennium Actress”, “Perfect Blue”, and finally “Paprika”. Of course, there are other directors that produces the same genre of anime, but Satoshi Kon’s influence is the one that got me started at looking from a different view.

Much like how Yoshihiro Tatsumi changed the manga scene, Satoshi Kon to me changed and matured the anime scene.

If you haven’t seen any of Satoshi Kon’s work, do seek it out and take a look. I sure hope the person taking over his role as Director in “The Dream Machine” will be able to continue in spirit, his creative, goodwill and legacy.

One of his final works as a director, from the Ani*Kuri project, “Ani*Kuri 15: Good Morning”.

To the family of Satoshi Kon, you have my condolences. For we too have loss a great director, a talented artist and an influential leader.

You will forever have my thanks and will be missed, so Rest In Peace, Director Satoshi Kon.

My Darling is a Foreigner!

Posted by tueac On August - 23 - 2010

And I sure hope she’s Japanese… Ah the dreams…

Nope, not talking about myself, but the Japanese Movie, “My Darling is a Foreigner!”. I have received news that the movie will be in Singapore’s cinemas starting Sept 16.

The movie is about a Mangaka finding her love of the life-time in a foreigner from the United States and how they work towards their relationship, even when the girl’s parents are against the relationship.

Of course, that will not be the only obstacle facing them. In a movie derived from the  popular manga of the same title by Saori Oguri(the same mangaka mention above), based on her real story with her husband Tony.

Acting as the mangaka(Saori) will be Mao Inoue(Hana Yori Dango as Makino). For Saori’s husband(Tony), it will be by Jonathan Ser, a comedian based in Japan.

The movie will open in Cinemas on September 16 at GV cinemas and selected Cathy Cinplexs.

ACE COMBAT: ASSAULT HORIZON Announced!

Posted by tueac On August - 11 - 2010

YES!!! Bandai Namco have finally answered my call! They are now developing a new ACE COMBAT game for the PS3 platform, like finally! Assault Horizon is the new push for the ACE COMBAT series, developed by Project Ace under Bandai Namco, and the game is set to be released in the year 2011.

What I am a bit disappointed about is the departure from the alternate earth, we called Strangereal. Instead the setting this time will be on our earth, with real locations like Tokyo, New York and etc.

I sure hope the game play will not be a QTE… In order to get behind an enemy, It’s really kills the fun… Either way, I’ll be awaiting the release of the game and this might be the biggest game release for me next year! Not talking about the graphics since this is only an announcement trailer, I’m sure the game will be better looking then this trailer.

Finally, something to look forward too!

P.S: As much as I hate it, the game is going to the Xbox 360 also…

Happy 45th Birthday Singapore!

Posted by tueac On August - 9 - 2010

I would like to wish Singapore a Happy 45th Birthday. So here goes,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE!!!

Next I would like to Dedicate this song from Corrinne May, Sing a song for Singapore

This song is just so beautiful and meaningful, especially if you are an Anime Fan… In the past that I remembered, I am only able to watch an anime on the national TV and the Cable Vision don’t really come along until I’m like 7 years old and I don’t watch cable TV until I’m 21…

Animax only arrive on our shore in the year 2004, and it’s so wonderful how far we have moved on from there. Being the few countries to first get same week telecast, the first in the world to watch the new EVA movies outside of Japan and many more.

No, The Sun is not setting on Singapore, It's just rising for the anime scene.

My generation have also witness the growth and decline of the local Anime VCD/DVD scene,  and the disappearance of once great Cosplay Clubs and their events.

Nonetheless I am at the beginning of Anime Festival Asia and ACME, along with the recent rise of the many activities to do with anime, even Anisong singer are coming to Singapore. And very soon, the first true LIVE SOLO Anisong concert is going to happen at the St James Power Station.

Not to say, I have also seen with my own eyes the growth of KKnM, and the starting of Genesis Frontier. I’m just so glad they are based in Singapore.

Also I love our Airport, with the direct flights to Tokyo, now if only there is a budget one way flight… Thou without it, a ticket to Japan is still attainable.

So, I am grateful for all the privileges I got as a Anime Fan in Singapore and I truly wish Singapore a Happy Birthday and may there be many more to come!

It’s JUST so good to be a SINGAPOREAN!

Screen Grab from Setokai no Ichizion thanks to Speed Knight. The rest are photos from the NDP 2010 Rehearsals and Previews.

Drawing with Wacom

Posted by tueac On August - 5 - 2010

Mel Kushida

Wacom have recently updated it’s Youtube channel with a new series of videos entitled Drawing with Wacom, with famous artists drawing with a Cintiq, the version where a 21″ LCD screen is the drawing board…

It’s currently into it’s 8th episode with featured artist like Mel Kushida(Character designer, So.Ra.No.Wo.To), KEI(Character designer, Hatsune Miku), Ryousuke Sawa aka Ryochimo(Key animator, Evangelion 1.0; Character designer, Birdy the Mighty Decode) and etc.

I know a cintiq is wasted on me, but they sure know how to use it good…

P.A Works new Anime: Hana Saku Iroha

Posted by tueac On August - 3 - 2010

From the people that made Cannan, True Tears and Angel Beats!, comes Hana Saku Iroha. The title is an original work with the character design by Kishida Mel whom also did So-Ra-No-Wo-To. The story follows the girl Matsumae Ohana, 16 years old, as she starts work at the Hot Spring Inn.

I have taken an interest in the anime since it looks really unique in terms of art-style and it kinda reminds me of Honey and Clover. The water-colouring/copic colouring and etc.

It’s also  nice to see an original story animated, along with Matsumae’s declaration of not wanting to think about her future… I wonder how it will pan out.

Further more, this seems to be P.A Work’s Tenth anniversary project. And I have sort of have good experiences with Tenth anniversary project, which make them more desirable.

The clip’s image song is “Patricia,” sung by nano.RIPE.
