ACME(A Certain Magical Event) began in 2009 as an event to promote the work of local dojin artists with the anchor highlight being the Charafest, selling goods from the Japanese Comiket 80.

SG Comics SP #1: Gone Case

Since it’s August, and it’s Singapore’s National Day soon. I would like to do a series of short reviews of Singapore Comics, published in the nation’s 45th year of existent.

First up is a comic named, Gone Case. It’s much like a social representation, seen from the eyes of a 12 year old, Primary Six School Leaving Exam(PSLE) taking boy facing a huge change in his family, bounded with a impending major exam.

His circumstances forced him to grow-up quickly in order to become the man of the Family.

I must say, Gone Case, is much more of an experiment to me, putting a certain perspective to the matters I have seen on news paper or TV drama.

Art-wise, it’s  should be considered in the Sub surrealism area. With a clear western influence, and it’s really quite good. See for yourself.

But I have a grip on the story, even thou the story are quite realistic, the way the author jump from 1 end to the other without proper closure or even a link is disorienting for me as a reader.

For example, the part where Ah Yong(the main Character) is promoted to be a prefect, it adds no merit to the story and nothing much other then to remind him of his father. I see no point. It would be good if the stress of being a prefect shows as well, even the expectation of the teacher pushing on him would have made the clif-hanging ending better.

And many other areas where things are left hanging only to be cut off then on to the next point.

In additional to the above, I feel that this book is too short and would really like to see Ah Yong’s life play out, for the better or for the worse… Since the Comic ended on a major turning point of his life.

Overall, I would recommend this book to those looking for a more serious topic to read about. Social science students should really take a look at it, it could be better then the chicken soup thingy… Just don’t expect a ending yet…

Title: Gone Case the Graphic Novel, Book 1
Story by: Dave Chua, based on the novel of the same name, published in 1996.
Art by: Koh Hong Teng
Price: $18.90
Published: Dec 2010
Where to Buy: Kinokuniya, Liang Court

Gone Case reminds me of 1 of the “Star of Shine” awarded yesterday at the closing of the Shine Youth Festival. Mr. Mohammed Farhan Bin Mohd Firdaus, 25, another the same age as me, that managed to make a difference.

Maybe I’ll do a short entry on them later on in the week or tomorrow.

It’s really Inspiring~

CDS @ Comics World(aka Cosfest)

PS: Collatral Damage Studio’s Booth is 26, and they have just announced more stuff~

This coming weekend, Collateral Damage Studios will be participating in an event at Downtown East.

The event is known as the Comics World, a out shoot event from the annually held Cosfest. The event starts at 12pm, and close at 7pm for both day.

Now so what is CDS bringing to the table~

They will finally be bringing Starry Nights! I have sort of seen the final product and it’s interestingly limited edition, with the first print amount to not more then a certain number…

At Comics World, you will be able to get it at $28 per book. While outside it will cost you $30.

You can look at a preview at this post here~

Other then this, they have the other headline items, namely their latest, Madoka Trading Straps! And by trading, it mean that you will be tikaming… And they are 5 Designs!

Here is the spec of the product, which they finally released after much teasing…

#CDS0025: Madoka trading straps

Each character is drawn by Haimerejzero and printed on hard acrylic, to hand proudly on… wherever you want to hang it. They will be packed individually in blind packets and you can try your luck for $6 each. Will you get Mami? Or will you get Homuhomu? No one knows till you open the packet.

Alternatively, you can just buy them all without the fuss of shaking or feeling those packets for $35. But… what’s the fun in that?

And these are only the stuff they have announced for now… … I wonder what else will be out~

But definitely not the Girl below~ And she is Chiya, Ani-Culture.net’s poster girl! She is given a new coat of paint by Jeremiah of Collateral Damage Studios~ You will see more of her soon ne~

SG Comifest 2

Last weekend, I made a trip to Bukit Batok Civil Services Club for SG Comifest 2. Although out of the way compared to the first event and battered by rain in the morning till late afternoon, the SG Comifest 2 still managed to attract a sizable number of people.

And I must say, I went down on 2nd day of the event.

It’s told to me that the crowd on Saturday is a lot more, and cosplayers really like the scenery of the club.

In the event, I have found quite a few interesting spots and Asuka, the dojin artist from Thailand really good~

Shanda, one of the event sponsors even brought along a game, Dragon Nest, which will be going into local beta test soon. From the demo shown, it’s looking like quite an interesting game.

The Anime House Moved! ACME gets Suara

Last weekend I had one hell of a busy week, having attended May’n Unite!!! Asia Tour, Singapore on Saturday(as a Guest Staff?!) and 3 rather wonderful events on Sunday.

The first of the wonderful event on Sunday is of cos, The Anime House’s (KKnM & The Card Geeks also Ani-Culture.net’s favorite anime shop) opening, after moving out of Sunshine plaza and in to POMO.

Yes, they have moved out of Sunshine and back to the place they first started 10 years ago.

Either way, the new shop is atleast 2 times bigger then their previous shop and it even comes with a special room for The Card Geeks. Yes, they have moved there too.

The room is expected to be able to hold 20 to 26 players with air conditioning and a glass see thru panel.

On the day of the shop opening, there is even an Card event outside siting 30+ gamers, Bushiroad even chipped in with an appearance by Suzuko Mimori(Seiyu, Sheryl, Milky Holmes), to play some card games(Weiβ Schwarz) and giving out Autographs. I heard from the players present that she is a tough opponent.

A talk with Sharon, the lady boss, revealed that more events of such scale could be organised to engage the customers.

Looks like POMO is going to be a new haunt for many people in the future. But before that look!

ACMEIII have revealed their mystery guest! And they are, Suara, Singer and The Mesh, MC/Seiyu/Official WS Player. Along with Singapore’s biggest Tourney, for 200 players!

Suara even made a short shout out for everyone~

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai Tv anime adaption and Nendoroid annouced

Two big news announcement for the novel titled ‘Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai’ by Yomi Hirasawa.

First up, the TV anime for it has been announced on the 18th of this month in Asahi and Yomiuri newspaper.

Even though the date is not set but the cast list is already up on the official website. o(≧v≦)o

The story centers on Hasegawa Kodaka, who has transferred schools, and he is having a hard time making friends. It doesn’t help that his blond hair tends to make people think he is a delinquent. One day, he runs into his bad-tempered solitary classmate Yozora while she’s talking animatedly to her imaginary friend Tomo. Realizing that neither of them have any actual friends, they decide that the best way to alter this situation is to form a club and start recruiting.

The next big news announced is that nendoroids have been announced for two of the characters, which are Yozora Mikadzuki and Sena Kashiwazaki. O(∩_∩)O

The planning for the figures is to be done by Otakana, who is dying to do the figures from this series.

Personally I can’t wait to get my hands on them. o(¯﹃¯)o

MANga Desu~: AKB49 – Renai Kinshi Jourei

Hmm, I was wondering what to write recently, since it’s been quite a hectic 2 weeks… Notices my quietness?

Well, I’m sort of back and I’m bringing with me this rather interesting Manga I found online, given that AKB48 have been making the headlines in Singapore for the opening of their SG Theater, Official Shop and Cafe(Soon).

And now, more of the Manga, AKB49 – Renai Kinshi Jourei.

Title: AKB49 – Renai Kinshi Jourei, Forbidden Love Journal
Creator: MIYAJIMA Reiji
Statues: Ongoing, since 2010.
Genre: Shounen, Slice of Life and Gender Blender…

About:

This manga is all about the AKB48, since it’s based on it. In a near future(20XX), where AKB48 surpasses the Beetles as the world’s best selling grouping with 20million albums sold!

And girls strive to be in the group and we have the girls from the 12th Generation! Well, here is where the twist comes in… That guy, Urayama, wanting only to help his lady friend get pass the audition by cross-dressing and joining the audition himself. However he unwillingly pass the audition and got into the 12th Generation, only to stay on, so as to encourage and see her dream come true… Yah…

Here, you get an insight on the life of an AKB48 auditioner, how hard they practice, how they help each another, the beautiful and even the unknowing evil that spurs to only motivate the members.

Of cos, just pages in, Fans will either be extremely pleased or enraged by a “small” fanservice.

My Views,

Not my views...

Let me profess, I have only seen AKB48′s concert once, and is not an AKB48 Fan. I’m really impressed by their performance and have heard of them since 2007, thru the internet. On my first trip to Japan, I almost went to their daily live in Akihabara.

Now about the Manga, I don’t know how true the manga might be, but it is really interesting to see, what might have been their progress and hardwork, especially the part about At-chan(Atsuko Maeda), giving the audience a 100% experience, the AKB48 experience. Then, it also showcase many of the current members and how they would help or “help” the 12th Gen.

About the Gender blending part… Soon thou you might even forget that his a guy… …

For now, I have read till the 5th Chapter or 5 weeks worth.

My recommendations,

Er... Fanservice ahead... yah?

If you are not a fan of AKB48, and wants to be one… Here is a quick way to catch up… thou, I’m not sure how true most of the story is, but it will most likely do to you, what it did to me… I’m kinda hooked… and is only waiting for my transformer to charge up a bit…

In fact, I find myself more in touch with why the AKB48 is so popular now and even more respect to the members… Example, Atsuko Maeda, whom performed 365 days in the first years of AKB48. But I will not be sucked into the trap and become a rapid fan of AKB48.

Technical wise, manga is really good, art wise and the plot is really engaging too, perhaps due to the 50% true part. Thus regardless of whether you are a fan of AKB48 or not, do read this, especially if you are already reading something like Skip Beat!

For rapid fans of AKB48, read, and hate the name Minoru Urayama… or is there a girl by that name?

So while waiting for the 14th or 15th of May, or the actual result of the senbatsu, read AKB49 – Forbidden Love Journal.
